FAQ

Straight answers for applicants, mentors, board members, and companies trying to understand how HighBar helps people prove tech-career readiness and pursue a first real tech job.

What is HighBar?

HighBar is the proof-first service where applicants clear a serious technical standard, earn the Ring, and show employers evidence they can trust.

Why do you call candidates applicants?

We use applicant for anyone pursuing the Ring. Some already work with an organization, and some are working on their own startup or project until a stronger internship appears.

How do monthly check-ins work?

Applicants progress through four monthly check-ins. Each check-in is a short expert review that tests evidence, surfaces weak spots, and helps the applicant decide what to improve before Demo Day.

What happens at Demo Day?

The applicant demonstrates the work, answers expert questions, and receives a pass/fail decision from board members. Passing means the evidence was strong enough to earn the Ring.

Can small companies hire or mentor applicants?

Yes. We especially encourage small companies, including one-person companies, to collaborate with applicants. Sending a message from an applicant card is the easiest way to begin.

How do board members get paid?

Board members may volunteer or be paid. Monthly check-ins use a flat fee per 15-minute visit. Demo Day fees are flat per appearance and negotiated when a board member is hired.

Do check-ins require video?

The live check-in can happen by phone or Zoom, and cameras can be on or off. The official review artifact is always one public YouTube video, 30-60 seconds long, posted within 24 hours before the review.

How do I start?

Use Begin HighBar in the top navigation or the application form to choose a role: applicant, mentor, board member, hiring partner, company project poster, scholarship requester, or feedback sender.
